Course Description
VITAAL‑K™ Level One is an introductory‑level professional development activity designed exclusively for occupational therapy practitioners seeking to integrate movement‑based structured literacy routines into OT practice. This course equips OTs with foundational, evidence‑informed tools that strengthen phonological awareness, executive function, self‑regulation, and functional participation in academic tasks.
Grounded in neuroscience, occupational therapy theory, and multisensory learning research, VITAAL‑K™ provides a structured, rhythmic, movement‑integrated approach that aligns with OT goals related to attention, working memory, motor planning, postural control, and cognitive participation.
This PD activity reflects evidence‑informed, occupation‑centered practice and supports OT practitioners in addressing literacy‑related participation barriers in school, clinic, and community settings.

This course aligns with the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF‑4) by supporting client factors, performance skills, and participation in academic occupations.

Learning Outcomes (Observable, Measurable, Demonstrable)
By the end of this PD activity, learners will be able to:
-
List the seven strands of the VITAAL‑K™ therapeutic literacy framework and describe how each strand supports occupational participation in academic tasks.
-
Choose foundational movement‑integrated routines that support phonological awareness, syllable segmentation, and self‑regulation during literacy tasks.
-
Describe the steps involved in phoneme–grapheme mapping using VITAAL‑K™ multisensory routines.
-
Identify early literacy breakdowns related to phonological awareness, orthographic mapping, and executive function using VITAAL‑K™ screening tools.
These outcomes reflect AOTA’s expectations for an Introductory educational level, where learners list, choose, describe, and identify foundational concepts.

Evidence‑Informed Practice Statement
This PD activity integrates peer‑reviewed research from neuroscience, occupational therapy, exercise science, and education demonstrating that:
-
Cognitively engaging physical activity improves inhibitory control, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and on‑task behavior.
-
Rhythm and timing interventions strengthen phonological processing and attention networks.
-
Multisensory, movement‑based learning enhances neuroplasticity, memory consolidation, and cognitive resilience.
-
Motor engagement paired with explicit instruction improves writing fluency and self‑regulation.

These findings support the use of VITAAL‑K™ as an occupation‑centered, evidence‑informed intervention.

Instructor Qualifications
All instructors meet AOTA APP requirements and are supervised by the CE Administrator and OT Consultant to ensure clinical accuracy, relevance to OT practice, and alignment with the OTPF.
