The most significant question in evaluating student writing is not WHAT the student spelled incorrectly, but WHY? Asking WHY causes us to look for insight into the student’s current understanding of English orthography—or its written spelling system. Since students must read writing, and all writing is spelling, knowledge of how students spell words may reveal phonological deficits, which might cause reading difficulties.
It's essential, therefore, to use simple but comprehensive spelling assessments to discover any potential reading difficulties.
